Placement Agent

Back to glossary

A placement agent is an intermediary that helps fund managers raise capital by connecting them with potential limited partners. Placement agents specialise in investor relationships and fundraising processes, earning fees based on the capital they help secure.

What placement agents do

Placement agents maintain extensive networks of institutional investors, family offices and high-net-worth individuals seeking private equity and venture capital opportunities. They help fund managers refine pitch materials, identify appropriate investor targets, facilitate introductions and guide managers through the fundraising process. Private equity placement agents typically work on a success-based fee structure, earning a percentage of capital commitments they help secure.

Working with placement agents

For emerging managers or established managers entering new investor markets, placement agents can provide valuable access and credibility. However, fund managers should carefully evaluate whether a placement agent's network aligns with their fund strategy and target investor profile. As Wouter Gort, Partner at Hummingbird Ventures, notes: "Fundraising involves being clear about what you are and what you are not. Many fund managers aren't qualifying their potential LPs effectively." Whether working independently or with a placement agent, fund managers benefit from modern infrastructure that demonstrates operational readiness to prospective investors.
